Those with a taste for quality blues, top-shelf brews and mouthwatering barbecue are invited to stop by The Streets of Brentwood on Sand Creek Road this Memorial weekend – Saturday, May 26 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday, May 27 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. – for this year’s Blues, Brews & BBQs extravaganza.

The free, family-friendly celebration, which raises funds for the Brentwood Police Activities League and other local nonprofit organizations, pits 33 barbecue teams from around the nation against each other, vying for the Double State Championship title and more than $18,000 in cash prizes.

“This year is going to be awesome,” said Event Chairman Jeff Schults. “It’s such a family-oriented, community event. We’re looking forward to a great weekend.”

This year’s Blues, Brews and BBQs features performances by well-known blues artists, an exhibition by the Liberty High School cheerleading squad, cardboard box races and the perennially popular car show. The Boy Scouts will hold Pinewood Derby races and the Shriner’s Clowns will make a guest appearance. A raffle for a top-of-the-line stainless steel barbecue will go to one lucky winner, proceeds benefiting Operation Creekside.

“We’re having lots of additions this year,” said Schults. “Sierra Nevada is coming out with a couple of big rigs with a wide variety of Sierra Nevada on tap. We’ve got everything from hot dogs to the most elaborate barbecue to dollar waters and sodas. It’s a very affordable, family environment.”

The true stars of the weekend are the show-stopping grillers, who will fire up everything from brisket and chicken to pork shoulder and ribs. “There will be 33 competitive barbecue teams,” said Schults. “And most of those will have four barbecues going, so you can imagine it’s going to be awesome.”

Space is still available for the car show; drive-up begins at 9 a.m. For more information, call Schults at 925-890-8296.
