The Summer Reading Festival celebrates reading and books, and marks the beginning of the 2010 Summer Reading program Make a Splash. For fun in the sun with the kids, the festival features games, crafts, face painting, a chance to reach for the sky in a Finding Nemo jumper house, wacky entertainer Daffy Dave, plus live music and free refreshments. Teens can compete in a Wii tournament throughout the summer, and a championship will be held at the Antioch library on Aug. 16.
The 2010 Summer Reading Festival is being held in various locations in Contra Costa County. For a complete schedule of events in East Contra Costa County and other community libraries, visit the Contra Costa County Library Summer Reading Festival Web site at http://guides.ccclib.org/srf.
The Summer Reading Festival will also present internationally-acclaimed writer Dave Eggers at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek on Sunday, June 6 at 1 p.m. Admission is free. Author of “Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius” and “Zeitoun,” and screenwriter for “Where the Wild Things Are,” Eggers founded the literary journal “McSweeney’s” and co-founded 826 Valencia, a nonprofit writing and literary tutoring center for children in San Francisco.
Eggers epitomizes the Summer Reading Festival – a celebration of the importance and the joy of reading for people of all ages. For ticket information, call the Lesher Center at 925-943-SHOW (7469) or visit www.lesherartscenter.org.
