Started by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, the international nonprofit organization creates and strengthens partnerships between United States and international communities, promoting peace through mutual respect, understanding and cooperation.
The relationship between Antioch and Chichibu started in 1967 when the Antioch City Council approved a resolution accepting Chichibu as Antioch’s sister city.
The Chichibu delegation, staying with host families, is enjoying a packed itinerary: sitting in on an Antioch City Council meeting, taking a boat ride on the Delta and tour of Black Diamond Mines downtown Antioch, the state capital and San Francisco, plus a trip along the coast, culminating in a visit to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.
According to Christopher Jacques, board member and secretary of the Antioch Chichibu organization, one of the program’s best facets are free days when host families can choose where to take the visitors.
“Some have gone all the way to Yosemite,” Jacques said. “Others have stayed close to home and shopped at Walmart, and loved it.”
The next delegation to visit Chichibu from Antioch is scheduled for August of 2013.
