Senior guard Dwayne Burns stepped up for the Lions, netting a game-high 21 points. Senior guard Juwon Blakely also helped, scoring 16 on the night for Liberty (15-4, 2-1).
Pittsburg 48, Antioch 46
Despite a second-half Antioch charge, Pittsburg held off the rival Panthers in a 48-46 boys basketball win on Tuesday. The Pirates held a 31-22 lead at halftime and were outscored by Antioch in the second half, but the Panthers didn’t have enough to pull off the win. Antioch senior guard Drew Cones had the hot hand, scoring 24 points and sinking three shots from the perimeter.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Heritage 51, Freedom 27
After a slow start, Heritage’s girls basketball team picked up the pace in a 51-27 victory Tuesday night over Freedom. The Falcons opened the game on an 8-0 run but were unable to maintain that cadence. The Patriots took a 22-17 lead at halftime and made a 29-10 run in the second half.
“It took us a while to get going,” said Heritage head coach Dan Swan. “They played very hard and were very into the game.”
Pittsburg 66, Antioch 18
Pittsburg opened Tuesday night’s 66-18 win over Antioch with a 25-2 first quarter and never looked back. The Pirates put up another 25-spot in the third quarter. Senior center Myeshia Ward netted a team-high 12 points for Pittsburg.
GIRLS SOCCER
Heritage 2, Deer Valley 0
Senior midfielder Kayla Hinojosa and junior forward Jamie Baron found the back of the net for Heritage in a 2-0 victory over Deer Valley Tuesday night. The Patriots improved to 9-5-1 overall (4-1 BVAL); the Wolverines fell to 4-9-1 (3-2 BVAL).
Freedom 2, Pittsburg 0
Goals by Angel Gosse and Catherine Carter propelled Freedom to a 2-0 victory over Pittsburg on Tuesday. The Pirates did not record a shot on goal that night, but the Falcons kept Pittsburg goalkeeper Sandra Padilla busy. She made 12 saves in the loss.
