As the holidays approach and families and friends gather to give thanks, many of us are reminded of those who are less fortunate. There are many ways to give back to the community so that everyone can enjoy the holiday season. Here is a list of several events in our area:
Thanksgiving Meal
Grace Bible Fellowship is hosting a Thanksgiving feast for the far East County community on Sunday, Nov. 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. at 657 McClarren Road in Brentwood. E-mail Kristin Gallego at kristinandrudy@comcast.net if you'd like to make a food donation for the meal. Non-perishable items are also being accepted for brown bag giveaways. Los Medanos College Food Drive
Students of the Rotaract community service group are seeking donations of turkey and ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, canned veggies and drinks for their food drive to support Village Community Resource Center. Donations may be dropped off at the main office at the Brentwood campus only, 101A Sand Creek Road. Donations will be accepted through Monday, Nov. 24. For more information, call 925-513-1625.
Brentwood Regional Community Chest
Donations of food and toys may be dropped off at any school in the Brentwood Elementary and Knightsen school districts for the Brentwood Regional Community Chest. Toy donations will be accepted now through Wednesday, Dec. 10, and food donations will be accepted through Friday, Dec. 19. Volunteers are needed to sort and box the food items from 4 to 9 p.m. at Brentwood Elementary School, 200 Griffith Lane on Dec. 19. Volunteers are also needed for distribution of meal packages on Dec. 20 from 7 a.m. to noon. Monetary donations may be sent to Brentwood Regional Community Chest, P.O. Box 845, Brentwood, CA 94513. One Warm Coat
Garin Elementary School will be collecting new and gently used coats for all ages and genders for One Warm Coat, an organization that helps everyone stay warm during the winter months. Child-sized coats will be donated to the Passing on Apparel for Student Success (PASS) program, where students in need of clothes can go for a coat this holiday season. Coats may be donated from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday, Dec. 12 at 250 First St. in Brentwood For more information, contact Cari Harris at 925-513-6370.
Friends of Oakley Food Drive
Collection barrels will be set up throughout Oakley on Friday, Nov. 28 for non-perishable foods such as cereal, canned goods (tuna, fruit and vegetables, olives and cranberry sauce), coffee, tea, pasta, gravy packets, canned frosting and boxed cake mixes. Food distribution will take place on Sunday, Dec. 21 beginning at 8:30 a.m. at City Hall, 3231 Main St. Donation sites include City Hall; Bank of the West, 2195 Main St.; ECC Bank, 3775 Main St.; Les Schwab, 89 Carol Lane; and Oakley Chiropractic, 3487 Main St. For more information, call 925-625-7000.
Holiday Care Package Drive
Independence High School in Brentwood is sponsoring a program to create care packages for our troops. Requested items include card games, DVDs, toiletries, batteries, breath mints, gum, granola bars, single drink mixes and beef jerky. Adopt-A-Family
Discovery Bay Elementary School is requesting the donation of gifts for children in the area. The gifts will be placed under the Christmas tree in the school's main office. The toy drive runs through Thursday, Dec. 11. Monetary donations for the Adopt-A-Family program may be addressed to the DB PTA and sent to the school's main office, 1700 Willow Lake Road. Toys for Tots
Pick up a gift tag at Freedom High School to fulfill the Christmas wish of a child attending one of Oakley's elementary schools.
