Veterans Press, Northern California’s largest publication for armed forces veterans and their families, has become the first newspaper to endorse a candidate in the CA 10 Special Election, urging “all voters, but especially veterans in the 10th Congressional District, to cast their vote for Anthony Woods.”

In a wide-ranging editorial, Veterans Press cited the declining number of military veterans serving in Congress and lauded Woods’ expertise on national security and veterans issues, leadership at West Point, decorated service in Iraq and continuing service upon his return home, for which he was a co-recipient of Harvard’s prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Public Service Award.

“… there is one candidate that, as far as veterans’ issues are concerned, stands clearly out in the field … Anthony Woods represents the next generation in veterans’ representation in Congress. He is young, energetic and committed to protecting veterans.”

In response to the editorial, Woods, who has also been endorsed by VoteVets.org, the nation’s largest progressive veterans advocacy group, released the following statement:

“There is no higher public-service calling than defending our country, and I am proud to have the support of my fellow veterans in this campaign. With America engaged in two wars overseas and our VA in crisis here at home, I know the importance of having leaders in Congress who understand our military, how decisions made in Washington affect our troops on the ground, and what it means to keep promises to our veterans when they come home.”

Anthony Woods is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He is a veteran of two combat tours in Iraq, and was awarded both the Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal for his service. Woods is a native of Fairfield and is campaigning for the Sept. 1 Special Election to replace Former Representative Ellen Tauscher in California’s 10th District.
