DWC goes to the mat at state tourney

The Delta Wrestling Club sent 10 members to Selma, Calif. for one of the most challenging tournaments of the year. The tournament featured the state’s best wrestlers ages 6 to 12.

In the 60-pound Division 1, Jacob Romeo and Duane Gurerro wrestled tough all day. Jacob faced two state placing champions. Duane wrestled tough and finished 2-2. The two look forward to California Folkstyle state wrestling tournament in March.

Wrestling in the Division 2 55-pound bracket, Hunter Leake completed the tournament with a 4-2 record. Hunter has been wrestling for five years and his experience showed.

Bryar Edwards held his own in the tough Division 1 78-pound bracket. Cole Zanirini fought hard in the competitive 72-pound bracket. And Olivia Leake gained valuable experience wrestling in the Division 2 40-pound bracket.

Wrestling in the difficult Division 1 73-pound bracket, Donovan Gurerro had a tough draw but gave it his all. Tournament rookie Adriann Reynoso wrestled in the Division 1 78-pound bracket along with Ethan Leake. Ethan was injured early on but his determination led him to compete at a high level.

Finishing out the long day was Cole Gregerson, who placed third in the Division 2 50-pound bracket. Cole suffered an early defeat but came back through the consolation bracket to avenge the loss. In the third-place match, Cole faced the opponent who beat him earlier in the day and came out on top 4-2. Cole finished with a 6-1 record and is now preparing for Reno worlds.

The Delta Wrestling Club is gearing up for the freestyle season and looking for new wrestlers to join the team. The club is coached by Yogi Leake, Rob Romeo, Dries Pruis and Dwayne Gurerro.
