Mountain View Christian Center of Oakley, 10 Bay Area taekwondo schools plus music icon MC Hammer are coming together for the Kick-A-Thon For Humanity to raise funds for a struggling Antioch family.

John Platt lost his three-month battle with cancer on Sept. 15, and now his wife, Florence, and two young children, Ryen and Kayla, are in danger of losing their home and business. Both children will participate in the Kick-A-Thon to honor their father.

The event will showcase students from each school making as many kicks as possible in a two-minute period. Rapper MC Hammer is scheduled to attend the event in support of the cause and will be presented with a humanitarian award.

Master Johnny Kang of Kang’s Taekwondo Academy in Antioch pulled together the support of nine other schools to initiate this one-of-a-kind fundraiser.

“I have kids of my own and can only imagine what the Platts are going through right now,” said Kang. “I’m pleased this event will help them on a financial level. But I’m just as pleased so many kids, families and individuals can come together, compassionately and generously, in support of our fellow man. It’s a profound lesson for the kids and an extraordinary act of love.”

The Kick-A-Thon For Humanity will be held Saturday, Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. in Mountain View Christian Center, 5000 Amaryllis St. in Oakley. Children who would like to participate in the fundraiser can obtain a sponsor sheet at Mountain View Christian Center or Kang’s Taekwondo Academy, 1368 Sunset Drive in Antioch.
